January 2022 - Powerscourt Tasting

Waterford Whiskey Society welcomed The Powerscourt Distillery for its first tasting of 2022 which was held online.

The tasting was led by Alan Malone their Sales Manager, and John Cashman their new Head of Whiskey. As we know Noel Sweeney departed in late 2021 but is still part of the board of the company.

While the whiskey in the Fercullen brand is all sourced at present, they do expect to have their first release from the distillery within the next 12 months.

The line-up for the event was as follows:

· Fercullen 8YO Blended Whiskey 40% ABV

· Fercullen 10YO Single Grain Whiskey 40% ABV

· Fercullen 14YO Single Malt Whiskey 46% ABV

· Fercullen 18YO Single Malt Whiskey 46% ABV

· Fercullen 20YO 5 Elements Single Malt Whiskey 46% ABV (not tasted by WWS before. Released in July 2021)

Fercullen 8YO Blended Whiskey 40% ABV

8YO corn grain whiskey with 16YO Cooley Malt, in an 80/20 ratio.

Fercullen 10YO Single Grain Whiskey 40% ABV

Single grain from Cooley Column Still, past through twice. 94% Grain (French Corn), and 6% Malted Barley. First fill Bourbon and finished in new Bourbon Barrels for 6 months.

Fercullen 14YO Single Malt Whiskey 46% ABV

Double Distilled Cooley, one of the better single malts on the market at the moment, there’s probably 1 year’s stock left before the bottling is finished.

Fercullen 18YO Single Malt Whiskey 46% ABV

An exquisitely balanced Single Malt Irish Whiskey that has been matured in Bourbon barrels for over 18 years. Smooth flavours of malted biscuits, vanilla and touches of caramel.

Fercullen 20YO 5 Elements Single Malt Whiskey

Following on from the huge success of the 2020 18-year-old bottling of the first of the 'Five Elements' series, this is a limited release of just 1,500 bottles. This is a marriage of 5 different cask styles expertly combined by Noel

Sweeney to create a distinctive and complex whiskey. 16-year-old bourbon barrel-matured malt whiskey has been finished for four years in a variety of Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximenez, Marsala and Muscatel casks, before marrying with 20-year-old Bourbon matured Single Malt. Five styles expertly combined by a Master’s touch, producing a symphony of flavour in this rare and inimitable Single Malt Irish Whiskey

This was a great tasting and we thank Powerscourt for kicking of the year in style as they did in 2021.
